5 Studying Tips for Finals Week

Finals week is definitely one of the tougher weeks in college, and you’re almost going to want to pull your hair out halfway through (if you haven’t done so already). But no worries, NextGenVest is here to help. Studying is one of the most important things to remember to do prior to/during finals week, but don’t forget to take care of yourself as well! Maintaining a steady balance and staying organized is a surefire way to help you and your friends get through this.
1. Schedule everything.
Remember you’re not alone! Having everything you need to do laid out right in front of you proves to be very convenient and helpful in increasing productivity. Start by listing out the major things that need to be done, then go back and review that list to see if there are any smaller tasks that stem from the bigger ones- something as small as emailing a professor. Schedule each task for a certain day of the week, or hour in the day to make sure they get done and on time. Completing small tasks one by one eventually leads to completion of the bigger task at hand. It keeps you on track, assures you won’t forget anything important, and decreases your stress level.
2. Take breaks!
Your brain will probably turn to mush if you’re constantly trying to force information into your head for five hours straight. Take 10-15 minute breaks in between chapters, subjects, etc. where you’re just listening to music or eating, or even laying on the couch. Careful though, don’t get too carried away. If you know you’re going to get distracted if you touch your phone during your break, then don’t touch it.
3. Don’t Stay in the Same Place for Too Long!
If you stick to the same exact spot every time you sit down to read your notes, you’re eventually going to get tired of it and your attention is going to start shifting. Try studying in the library for one day, then spend a few hours studying in your room, or a coffee shop. Alternating your spots feels more refreshing and less draining.
4. Avoid distractions!
If you’re like me and get distracted by your phone very easily, turn it off. Sometimes, putting my phone on do not disturb helps, but a lot of other times, it doesn’t work at all. Turn your phone off or put it on airplane mode and stuff it in your bag. Stay away from your TV as well!
5. Remember you’re not alone!
Sometimes, it’s good to be surrounded by other people while studying, especially those going through the same thing as you. Form a study group in your class or text a few of your friends to get together once or twice a week to either review your notes together, or simply do your own work together. Being able to talk to someone else and ask questions while studying definitely helps you stay on track. Plus, they might have helpful advice to share with you!
